A trained, SIA-licensed security officer working a standard daytime shift in a UK city typically costs between £18 and £25 per hour. Add nights, weekends, public holidays, or specialist requirements and that rises. Officers with more experience, Close Protection certification, or specific sector experience command higher rates.
For high-risk sites — construction compounds with high-value plant, vacant commercial properties with known trespass problems, events with crowd management requirements — you will pay more. Not because providers inflate the price, but because the officer quality and liability coverage costs more.
Remote locations in Scotland, the North West, or rural areas sometimes cost more than equivalent city-centre work. Travel time, accommodation, and the difficulty of retaining good officers in lower-density areas push the rate up.
What You Are Really Paying For
The hourly rate is a number. What you are actually buying is the officer’s ability to respond correctly when something happens on your site.
That ability comes from:
SIA licensing. Every officer must hold a valid SIA licence for the role they are carrying out. Check this on the SIA website directly — do not take a company’s word for it.
BS 7858 vetting. This is the British Standard for security staff screening. It covers criminal records checks, employment history, and right-to-work verification. A company that shortcuts vetting is passing the risk to you.
Training and site briefing. An officer who arrives at your site knowing the egress points, the client contact, and the escalation protocol is more useful than one who is learning on the job. If briefing quality is low, you will notice it the first time something goes wrong.
Retention. High turnover in security is a known problem. An officer who has been on your site for six months knows it better than one who rotated in last week. Low staff turnover is worth paying more for.
Insurance and liability. ACS Approved companies carry public liability insurance and employer liability cover as part of their accreditation requirements. Verify this before you sign.
Why Cheapest Is Not Best
There are security companies competing on price who will undercut the market by skipping steps. No BS 7858 vetting. No ACS overhead. No structured briefings. An officer on site who is barely qualified to be there.
If an uninsured, unvetted officer assaults a member of the public on your site, the liability falls on you. That is the real cost of choosing on price alone.
ACS Approved status does not guarantee perfection, but it does mean an independent auditor has checked that the company meets baseline standards. It is the closest thing to a quality guarantee that exists in UK security.
What to Get Before You Sign
Ask for a site visit. Any company that will price a manned guarding contract without seeing your site is not pricing it properly. They are guessing.
Ask for officer profiles. Who will they put on your site? How long have they worked for the company?
Ask what happens if the scheduled officer is sick. A relief officer network matters — gaps in cover are a liability.
Ask for incident logs from similar sites. A provider with nothing to show you has not worked sites like yours.
